Topsoil vs. Compost: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

We get this question constantly: "I need some good dirt — do I want topsoil or compost?" The answer depends entirely on what you're trying to accomplish. Using the wrong one is a common and costly mistake. Here's a plain-language breakdown.

What Is Topsoil?

Topsoil is the uppermost layer of earth — typically the top 2 to 8 inches of native soil. It contains a mix of minerals, organic matter, and microorganisms. Screened topsoil has had rocks, roots, and debris removed, leaving a fine, workable material. It's used primarily for filling, grading, and establishing growing areas. If you're leveling a lawn, filling a raised bed frame, or building up a slope, topsoil is what you need.

What Is Compost?

Compost is decomposed organic matter — leaves, food scraps, plant material — that has broken down into a dark, crumbly, nutrient-rich amendment. It doesn't provide structure or fill volume the way topsoil does. Instead, it improves the soil you already have by adding nutrients, improving drainage in clay soils, and improving water retention in sandy soils. Think of compost as food for your soil, not a replacement for it.

When to Use Each

ProjectUse TopsoilUse Compost
Filling a raised bed✓ As the base fill✓ Mixed in at 20–30%
Leveling a lawn✓ Primary material
Improving garden soil✓ Till in 2–4 inches
Seeding a new lawn✓ 4–6 inch base layer✓ Light topdressing
Topdressing existing lawn✓ 1/4–1/2 inch layer
Planting trees/shrubs✓ Backfill✓ Mixed into backfill

For most lawn and garden projects in Washington, Warren, and Saratoga Counties, the best approach is a combination: screened topsoil as the structural base, with compost mixed in at roughly 20–30% by volume to boost fertility and soil health.

How Much Topsoil Do You Need?

Topsoil is sold by the cubic yard. For a new lawn, plan for 4–6 inches of topsoil over the entire area. For raised beds, 8–12 inches is ideal. Our quote form has a built-in calculator — enter your area dimensions and depth and we'll calculate the exact quantity and cost.
